wrd,

re. " Why would there be both a pen cancel and a CDS "

very simple, the pen cancel is genuine fiscal usage whilst the cds. is completely fake.

How much is it worth, whatever a collector would pay for a spacefiller,

well there you go! See Paul, ~ all you have to do is post a scan of any stamps you cannot identify yourself, and a knowlegable philatelist, with the correct catalogue or reference book will identify them for you.

Hope you enjoyed the brats!.

I'm helping a neighbor who has inherited some stamps and wants to sell what he's not interested in. I have questions on 4 items:

1. This 5 shilling stamp from Trinidad. Why would there be both a pen cancel and a CDS? Any particular value for this stamp?

2. Is there any value in covers from Lithuania from 1989-1991 (including some registered letters)? Best to just sell as a lot (perhaps 50 covers)?

3. Is there any value in covers from China from the late 1980's (including some registered letters)? Best to sell as a single lot (perhaps 10 covers)?

4. Was the roadrunner/coyote pane issued both with the rightmost stamp with die cuts and with the rightmost stamp imperforate? My most recent catalog doesn't have this issue, which is from 2000. I believe the bugs bunny pane with the rightmost stamp imperforate has a reasonably significant CV, but don't know about the roadrunner/coyote issue.

Thank you in advance,
Bill D.

Peter C… It’s similar to a couple styles pictured in Scott, but chances are it’s not a patent cancel which cut into the paper. Almost all of those had a central dot or oval where the abrasion took place.

D2… The sharp-eyed eBay stamp buyers have become much more numerous than they were even 2-3 years ago. Then it was relatively easy to swoop on misdescribed lots. Back then I fought it out with only 4 other buyers at most, half the time no one but me spotted the gem. Now there’s a crowd running after the undiscovered goodies, so much so I have largely given up looking for them. They’re still out there on eBay, but too many hyenas gather at the first whiff of carcass.

Jay,

" not even enough to know which end is up "

but I know he was delighted when it " ended up ".

That's the good thing about Ebay, happy seller and I think an even more happier buyer seeing a dealers buying price.

I have often seen the unoverprinted stamp for sale but I can't remember ever seeing the overprint offered, it must be extremely rare and also proves that there are many out there watching the lots that have poor descriptions,

D2… The “10 K” overprint is very hard to read, in fact I didn’t notice it at all until I enlarged the scan and increased the contrast. Presumably in real life it is more noticeable, but even with that weak, blurry, upside-down scan there were eagle eyes who were able to figure out what it is. The fact that the seller started it out at $1.99 suggests he didn’t have a clue what the stamp is, not even enough to know which end is up…

Jay, it is definitely the 10 on 20. There must be a mistake in the buying list as the original issue was only one stamp.

I was thinking about Paul's comment about the design and remembered that the ordinary Russian postage stamps were redesigned in 1889 with the addition of thunderbolts to the posthorns to symolise the amalgamation of the Postal & Telegraph services. That is why the design shows the Telegraph crest not the imperial arms or post office,

I have to admit I made a mistake with my comment on the Russian Telegraph stamp, unlike some others I do admit when I make mistakes. I mentioned that the scan was inverted and reversed whilst it is only inverted. I am sorry for any problems that may have occurred because of my inattention to the facts when I made my comment as I had been out all day and it was very late at night and I was tired. I didn't have a profitable day, I just kept spending and spending.

My wife's niece is coming here for a month from Jakarta on Wednesday and we are going for a break to the Victorian Alps for 4 days (more spending).

SEE WE GOT A SMART A$$ IN THE CROWD ------Here is my point of view on that Russian telegraph stamp .First it doesn't have the Imperial Eagle which would mean its from the government .It has what looks like a private crest or a company crest on it .So that needs a explation .

Second Russian stamps didn't spell out Kopeck they have KON on them but

BUT some stamps from the Far Eastern Republic spell out the word KOPECK on them ,just like the scanned stamp.....gee it was 5:00 am in the morning and was going out the door and gave my guess on what it was ....but smart a$$ had to wait for his master to announce what it was before he barked .........goes to prove im dealing with catalog queens .....Paul,who had a good and profitable day....

NOIP… A couple things about the Russian telegraph stamp, a slightly enhanced version of which is here. There’s a diagonal crease through it, and also what looks like “10 K” overprinted across both “20”s. I am guessing that means the stamp has been revalued downward, from 20 to 10 kopeks. Although the ink of the “10 K” seems light it obliterates the design at both right and left (blue arrows).

Claghorn, it is the 1st. Telegraph issue of Russia, haven't got a catalogue on hand which shows the date but it is about 1870. For DJS

Did not see any used Scott specialty pages at Metroplex.
One seller had some old Scott albums, I think whole world, in brown binders for $220.

No one was specifically selling Israel.
Ron Ritzer had some Israel albums for sale but seeing as there are no volcanoes in Israel (it does have a volcani Institute which keeps popping up in my searches), I have no idea as to the worth of the stamps.

Actually, while I was at his table someone bought about $2,000 of Hawaii, Portugese Colonies and other on stock cards.

I think the dealers did most of the buying and selling of albums amongst themselves on Friday though there seemed to be a number of collectors trying to sell off their albums to dealers and were not getting sufficiently high prices.

All, in all, quite well-attended for a NY show in the middle of summer.

I was somewhat bemused by the hotel parking which read

Parking all Day
$6.95
for 1/2 hour

patti1459… To elaborate on Roger’s answer, US postage stamps printed since the 1920s have been hoarded in vast quantities by people who thought that they would be valuable someday. But since so many were saved, there is virtually no market for them, and people trying to get rid of them are forced to sell them in lots for 80 cents on the dollar. Your stamp falls smack into that category. There must be millions of unused ones still out there, so your best bet is to stick it on a letter with 37¢ additional postage as Roger suggests.

I've been under the impression for years that the broken-hat variety of the 2 cent Columbian issue (US Scott 232) was an either/or item.
Either the V-shaped notch was there or it wasn't.
I have a copy that I bought as a broken-hat variety but was questionable.

The July 16, 2007, Linn's Stamp News has changed my thinking.
I quote from page 62 of the referenced issue:

"On the broken-hat variety, the third figure from the right has a V-shaped notch at the top right of his hat that was caused by a transfer roll break.

The deterioration was progressive and there are several different phases of the variety."

So now it appears I may have one of those intermediate stages.

Broken-hat variety comparison.

vinny NO, ebay don't 'invite' you to be a Powerseller, they inform you when you have reached powerseller status, and if you check the SITE MAP I think you will find the 'bottom line' is sales of over $1,000 a month for 3 straight months, a feedback score of over 99% etc...
As your sales for the last 30 days only total a couple of hundred dollars, there is no way you would have made POWERSELLER, so any such email would be bogus (hope you didn't click any links in it!)
Also, what wrd Bill says is true, if its not in My Messages, its not from ebay.

J-wild - re (Yessiree, stick this and a 41¢ stamp on a letter and it will get where it’s going. )au contraire, that would render it non-machinable and require an additional 17 cents.

That seller had a few patches mislisted. I emailed him about one and received a polite response that he would change category. Guess seller didn't think to check his other listings.

Re your latest below, some folks must live in peculiar environments (under a rock)

Roger as a former APS president and AAPE President told me about an obscure exhibit subject of mine "Publish. Publish. Publish." And now as you know the web makes it easier. I have been amazed at the exhibits I have judged that are somewhere online. Unfortunately for postmark exhibitors there exists (from my experience) an unfortunate prejudice against high levels for pmk exhibits. Part of that lies I believe in the proponderance of them that are just poor postmark exhibits. Yours on the other hand is a delight and I would love to see it in the frames.

The AAPE has, I believe, a critique service by which a photocopy of your exhibit is passed on to one or more judges who are familiar with such an exhibit, or at least the type of exhibit. Their remarks would likely be more in the area of continuity of the story line and weaknesses in balance, but could prove useful.

Nitey-night all, now that it is the 14th I can come out and play.

Io, their biggest sale is during the annual Woodstock Library Fair, which is maybe the biggest annual event of the village. This year's fair is two weeks from tomorrow.
But they have a couple of sales a month until into Fall. They possess a barn, see, and all the area libraries give all of their book donations to Woodstock, as none of the others have any storage capacity at all beyond their little stacks. So the barn is always packed with boxes of books; and one finds all kinds of surprising things there, but it's never what you are looking for!

And you have fun at the Metroplex. Here's hoping you add new volcanic issues to your exhibit!

Hi All! Just dropping in to compliment Matt on his recent Linn's article. Very interesting news event that big Gross auction benefit. Goes to show there are a few real philanthropists still around, too!

I will unfortunately not be able to attend the show in Nuevo York this weekend. I will be in Woodstock and hope to get there in time to hit the Woodstock Library Sale and score some sci-fi/fantasy works I haven't yet read.

Antonius-Ra, enjoyed your stories. I actually met Kris K briefly in '92 or '93, was security on him at a Left Coast Bay Area benefit event at which he performed. Apparently his granddad(I think it was?) was in my same union (Typographical) back in the day.

Did anyone else here receive one of the random APS surveys in the mail? I was surprised to get it, as I am not a member, but I participated anyway.

Regards to All
A Drop In

I'll make every effort to speak with someone in Portland. I could also show them my exhibit which would give them a complete understanding of what I've been trying to accomplish. Now it's off to work and get those passengers safely to Maui, or Honolulu, or Kauai, or whatevers.

Roger,

the rules regarding the Swiss competition appear to be for national exhibiting, for exhibiting in FIP International Exhibitions the award would have been recognised,

Roger, send an email to one of the Commissioners who handle International Exhibitions, they would (or should) know the requirements and qualifications needed for overseas entries,

Thanks for your input. Yes, my exhibit has received three National level Vermeils but it seems I'm still stymied by the Swiss rule of 60 pages (5 12 page frames) to first exhibit there. The purpose last year of reducing my exhibit for Westpex to 64 pages was to see if I oculd do it. I had to severely limit the time covered and examples shown. To me a lot was left out for brevity.

This year I took everything from last year (64 pages) and added everything I felt necessary to tell the complete story. I ended with 138 pages. So that meant I needed to cut 10 pages. Some went easily, other items were combined onto pages, and other individual items put back into my stock book. I'm at the point where I believe the story is told with interesting examples from each period. (For example destinations of outgoing mail or incoming origins represent over 35 different countries.)

Once I have this years scans all done, and have time after mid-August, I'll be replacing my previous online exhibits with the new.

It's my understanding that winning US National awards doesn't effect Swiss exhibiting. The last few years there has been a team competition at Swiss shows. An American team led by Harlan Stone had to start at the bottom and work its way up over a three year period. He won the US Champion of Champions with his Sitting Helvetia, but no matter, he had to start at the entry level for that competition. I'm not sure what or where my Vermeils are considered "entry level" in the international scene. All shows I participated in were World Series shows -Westpex, ROMPEX, New York Mega Event. This Year Stampshow 2007. I'll fond out and ask questions at Stampshow.

Alec,

thanks for your comments,

A lot of countries have the old 12 sheet frames and as it costs a lot of money to construct new ones it will take time for all countries to use frames with the same layout and number of sheets.

I presume the qualifications would be for entries not entrants which is the same as we have here in Australia.

Roger Have you ever considered contacting the Swiss study Groups and possibly having your subject put into print in the form of some sort of Monograph ? Perhaps there is such a group in the US ?
Here in the UK the Germany & Colonies PS encourages members to do such things and already we have had several very intersting monographs published on very specialized areas that do require a lot of text and explanations, as well as illustrations of course. The latest one is hot off the press and covers German East Africa during World War I. I mention it because I know several here are interested in the Colonies. I know the author a Mr Mike Farrant and should anyone wish to know more about this particular monograph please get in touch and I can endevour to find out costs etc.
Not sure if my last comment constitutes business and breaks ebay rules. If it does then I apologize in advance.

German Exhibiting

Firstly welcome Andreas to the ebay.com Stamp Board. I should mention that I know Andy personaly. That aside speaking as one who has and does exhibit in Germany I can perhaps explain some of the so called "rules".
I'm no expert and should any point I raise be wrong then hopefully Rainer will be able to correct me.
Firstly the German and many other European countries have a rigid level of entry for competitions. There being three National levels, known as Rangs (levels) 1, 2 & 3. The latter being the starting point for everyone. No matter what they wish to exhibit.

I must state that I am not sure if for example exhibitor "A" achieves enough points to enter Rang 1 with exhibit "Z" he can then enter other exhibits straight in at the same level.Or wether he/she has to start each exhibit at the lowest level.

Once the exhibit has achieved a certain level of points at each stage the exhibitor can then step up to the next level. Now this system works very well because it allows the collector to develop his collection. Something which I don't believe exists in the USA. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe anyone can enter a US National competition even with a first time entry. Is it no wonder then that some who do go down that road & achieve a poor award never exhibit again .

Yes the German system does have different rules to what I would call the English speaking community. But basically they are very much the same as everywhere else. Yes the preference from German National judges is for uniformity so to speak. As David B rightly stated the ,"Christmas tree" effect is a tradition and not a rule cast in stone. The text as everywhere should really only explain what the item is and explain anything not having an obvious meaning. Such as markings etc.

One drawback to the German National system is that they still use 12 sheet frames for their National exhibitions whereas most now use 16 sheet Frames.Though there is talk of that changing so that everyone worldwide will eventually accept and use the 16 sheets per frame.

German National competition also places a great deal of importance on the exhibit having a frame layout plan explaining how the exhibit is laid out. This is often in addition to the main title page. Judges then expect to see this followed very rigidly. In my opinion too much so but that is not an issue really.

I'm sure Roger's exhibit would be well received in Switzerland. Though how he goes about exhibiting there is another matter. One way of course is for his exhibit to achieve a US national level of Vermeil or greater which would qualify it to be shown at International level anywhere in the world.

Roger,

there is an old saying,

" The more a judge talks about the presentation means the less he knows about the material ",

Roger, there is nothing wrong with having a lot of text if the material needs it but what judges don't like is a lot of text where the material is self explanatory.

wawelgeist,

If I was you I would double check those " rules " as they appear to be wrong although I tend to agree that the Xmas Tree approach is a good idea although it may tend to make it awkward to collectors who want to display material in exact order.
