Thanks all for the suggestions.

D66: Thanks for the offer. Unfortunately, I read that Frontpage was put out to pasture, not shipped with Vista, and the older versions crash in Vista. Is this not true? (he doesnt have it anyway but maybe you could send him an older version.)

Stamphicj: The NVU would be perfect but no version for macs so I could not help him along. (Alec is the kind of user that doesn't know what an applications folder is :/ You want the job? LOL.

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking.

"Alec wants to expand beyond the template format"

I construct all my web pages using basic html and adobe pagemill. Which was free and is, unfortunately, no longer available.

Admitedly there is a trade-off between wanting to display a collection and learning the language required to get it displayed.

Nothing comes easy unless you have the money to get someone else to do it for you!

Perhaps Paul or David can come up with suggestions.
Posted by manhattanconcepts   ( 10 ) on Feb-10-08 at 16:53:05 PST   Listings
Alec,

The new site regarding your inflation collection is a welcome addition and you are so welcome for my help.

Question for board:

Alec wants to expand from the template format we used, long distance, to create his current site. He wants to achieve a more sophisticated exhibition format for other purposes, and as you can see, his collection warrants a sophiticated format.

If it were me, I would use Dreamweaver or Photoshop but I am a mac user and am unfamiliar with inexpensive graphics software available for the pc. I know those programs are available for the pc but there is no point in having him spend a lot of money on this kind of software unless he plans to do sites for a living.

If anyone can think of less expensive graphics applications for pc's, or perhaps ones that comes with Vista out of the box, I would appreciate knowing what they are. I think I can walk him through creating a site with Word 2004, (ugh) but that would be challenging to say the least.

He does not have Photoshop Lite or any design programs convertable into html that I can see. We have considered trials of the expensive stuff but I think the learning curve would eat up the trial time very quickly.

I have also investigated software that comes with hosting packages but all of that is template based as far as I can tell and no improvement over what we have used.

Suggestions appreciated!

my hearty congratulations on a job well done. it shows how diligent research on a specialised subject with examples to show the rate changes is suited for an online display. You will be very successful when the collection is exhibited competively and your work will be envied by many who wish they could do the same with their philatelic endeavours,

hondo 64 - if you have a stamp shop nearby take it to them and ask about the overall value of it. A dealer should be able to thumb through it and determine if it is a common collection or something of value.

Hondo Easiest may be for you to show here a couple of pages from a country or two here. It will allow for a better opinion to be given as to what is or could be suitable for ebay or maybe even through a main line auction sale.

HONDO, welcome to the board. For starters, scroll way back down this board to the big yellow box and read some of the links there.
You didn't say which countries your family has collected. You will need to check values from a Stamp Catalogue. Value of stamps depends on condition, and rarity. Age has very little bearing on the value. Many fun collections are put together with little money being spent, so you are probably the best judge on whether your Father and Brother spent a lot of money on their hobby or not. If they did they could have receipts and invoices from Auction Houses or Stamp Dealers for some of the better stamps. These will help you.

Some of our chatters here will be along during the course of the next day or 2, so check back often for more advice, but in the meantime read the Yellow Box.

For best results, stamp pictures for eBay need to be SCANS of the stamps, not digital photographs.

Could anybody give me some general information.I recently inherited a stamp collection from my Brother.

It was started by my Father around 1917 and my Brother worked on it up until a couple years ago.

I know nothing about stamp collecting or how to go about finding the value of this collection.

Could anybody give me some advice on how to find the value of this.

Is it possible to start taking pictures of some of the stamps, describe them, and put them up for auction,a few stamps at a time ?

I would appreciate anybodys help.

Thank you

NOIP The work on my home page is now well under way. Still a lot of things I want to change and add. That though will be a slow process as I still have a lot to learn.

I must take this opportunity to warmly thank Katrina who came here towards the end of last year and very kindly offered me help to at least get me started. Without her help I'd still be dead in the water.

It is basically just my collection and a lot of text information that I hope explains many things which you do not get to read if the collection is in competition. A site showing it as a competition exhibit is a future task I have set myself.

The first postal period #18 has not all been scanned yet and there are still a few items to be added to the second postal period #19 . The other periods are all completed for content at least.Anyway for anyone interested in Inflation Provisional Postal History please feel free to have a peek at my efforts so far.

Re COM I am aware that ebay/Paypal does not accept the COM as a so called secure method of posting.
I don't sell that often on ebay and though I do accept Paypal as a payment method I certainly don't insist on buyers taking out expensive tracking mail postage costs. Yes admittedly there is the risk that some scammer may try and claim the item never arrived but that is just something I have lived with since day 1 of selling on ebay.

To be honest I don't agree with the new fee hike increases either but as D1 stated there simply isn't another more popular selling site around at the moment. Until such time as ebay have some serious competition and both buyers and sellers are aware of it then ebay will simply continue to be the main venue for buying and selling for the majority of online buyers. Hence why they continue to do as they please.
By buyers I refer to philatelic material not other categories.
Posted by iomoon   ( 1059 ) on Feb-10-08 at 11:18:17 PST   Listings
Surely the postage cost only becomes a moot point when the cost of the stamp exceeds the cost of postage.

Paying $4.60 to get tracking on a stamp bought for $3 is patently absurd.

PayPal does not recognize the Cert. of Mailing in their dispute process. They require a service that's traceable via the web. So you must choose one of such services. PayPal wants to be able to put the number into their computer and get a report on the package's location.

I am not a complainer as this board well knows….

eBay fee hike is fine by me everything goes up and up so what, get over it and move on.

eBay bidders and underbidders filled my stamp tin with cash last week and I can’t see the local dealers giving me that sort of money for my revenue and railway material I often sell.

Good on ya eBay keep it up!

I don't believe eBay/PayPal recognize the USPS Certificate of Mailing in Disputes.
All it shows is that something was mailed, not that it was delivered.
And eBay/PayPal take the position that it's the seller's responsibility until delivery is confirmed.
Posted by jaywild   ( 1049 ) on Feb-10-08 at 09:24:35 PST   Listings
comrade… If eBay started charging fees to buyers their business would dry up in a matter of hours, otherwise they would have already done so. They believe in wringing every last cent out of every last person they can, but this has policy has its limits. Remember the foolish king and the goose that laid the golden eggs? Well, there you are.

The feedback issue has its pros and cons, the biggest pro being that buyers who have something to complain about will be able to leave appropriate feedback without fear of suffering a retaliatory negative themselves. If sellers are conscientious they shouldn’t have a problem with the new system—if they are accustomed to walking a thin line between honesty and flummery the new policy might get them to acquire a little more integrity.

The most common complaint any seller has with buyers is non-payment, and since eBay already has policies in place to deal with deadbeat bidders the new policy will neither improve nor worsen that particular difficulty.

hello,
I was just wondering what ebay stamps sellers think about the new changes. I know ebay charges are high, but those of us who sell in a standard auction pay a higher commission rate. Just think what would happen if ebay started charging fees to the buyer, like most stamp auctions!!! The biggest concern that I see the inability to leave negative feedback. I have never left negative feedback, but I would like to just in case. What do you think?

NOIP… Yes, that is a wonderful Warsaw uprising exhibit, and I’m glad it has gone to an appropriate home where it will be kept intact. It always saddens me to see a collection cut up that was obviously put together lovingly. Some weeks back there was flood of covers on eBay from Maine, hundreds of them on pages all carefully labeled and mounted that must have taken twenty years to put together. I bought items that fit into collections of mine, and wrote the seller asking whose collection it was that was being dismantled, but received no reply.

Jeff S... That duplicate COM was part of a prexie-liberty-Prominent Americans-Americana covers collection currently being lotted out on eBay. I got some other choice items from it over the past few weeks.

infla-alec... Certificates of Mailing have only a limited usefulness in terms of legal proof that an item was actually mailed when and where stated. I use them infrequently, and only as a deterrent to potential shifty claims of “I never received —”. I bought one recently and emailed a scan of it to someone who might otherwise have been tempted to pull such a ploy. It’s like putting a sticker on your window that says you subscribe to an on-call home alarm system. Most crooks don’t want to run the risk of finding out just how accurate that claim is.

You can also get a Return Receipt from the PO but that requires sending the item via the much more expensive Priority Mail. (Priority Mail is the Post Office’s version of a tax upon the naïve—priority items all go in the same pouches and the same trucks/trains/planes as regular first class mail, at about ten times the cost.) I think the COM is about a dollar.

I am trying to identify a german stamp that I saw printed in an album, but cannot find in my Scott catalog (I know, I should get a Michel). THe vertical stamp features a palm tree behind a swastika and was situated with Feldpost, Luftfeldpost and Kurland stamps in the album. It was a black-and-white album photo, so I'm not sure of color. Jimbo Thank you for the information. I don't buy much from ebay US side but handy to know I can ask for a mailing certificate. Yes I do mainly make $ payments via Paypal but I also hardly ever ask for registered or traceable mail. Now if only Paypal would agree that a COM is ample proof that an item has been posted and stop trying to force buyers to pay for unwanted expensive registered mail. I say that because I have noticed now a few more sellers insisting on registered mail being used for Paypal payments. I assume because the scammers are using non registered mail to claim item was never sent etc and demanding their money back from Paypal.
I have no idea how widespread that scam is but hopefully it isn't too common amongst the philatelic community.

The collection was offered azt the Felzmann Auction held from 09 - 09 Febraury 2008, lot 7400.
https://www.felzmann.de/de/pages/tophighlights120/

Description:
1944 UPRISING of national Polish Home Army (ARMIA KRAJOWA) against the German occupation, the so-called WARSAW UPRISING (Aug 01 - Oct 02, 1944), analyzed and illustrated in academical manner using Polish letters, documents, provisional and definitive insurgent postage stamps on more than 80 albums leaves. This collection (consisting of 3 albums) impresses e.g. with the presentation of the ORIGINAL DRAFTS (water colours) of the first POLISH OWN POSTAGE STAMPS 1944, authenticated by the "Sklanica melunkowa Mokotowska 65" (Polish intelligence office Mokotowska Street) or "Komenda placu pld Warszawa srodmiescie" (HQ inner-city South) (naturally unique, all with certificates by Petriuk BPP). The scope of INSURGENT STAMPS in various colours and prints with the well known "1.VIII 1944" designs (illustrating soldiers and ruins) is virtually breath-taking and gives together with the enormous number of SCOUT MAIL COVERS written in and/or delivered to the trenches of the uprising a MUSEUM CHARACTER of the utmost importance for the Polish national identity and history of the Polish State in World War II.

Included in the 123 items are postage stamps printed by insurgents with seals made from potatoes. Jaywild Jim I never knew the US had a certificate of mailing system. Does it still exist ?

Here in the UK we have had it for years now and it still exists to this day and is a free service. I'm not 100% sure but with a certificate of posting here I think it also gives you free insurance up to a certain amount if the item sent is subsequently lost or damaged.
Funnily enough the free service is hardly ever used.

jaywild neat perfin on the duplicate COM. Yes, ACA is for Aluminum Company of America in New Kensington, PA. It is an E rated perfin (quite common), but as you point out, it's the use that is scarce, not the perfin pattern.

Terry Hines… Another neat aspect of that $50 stamp auction is that it is only available for local pickup. Good news for all those folks who live in Crown Point, Ohio I guess…

On another note, and apropos given the recent perfin discussion, is this duplicate certificate of mailing. The name/address of the addressee is in carbon-paper blue (anyone remember carbon paper?) and the 2¢ Frank Lloyd Wright stamp has an ACA perfin, presumably from Aluminum Company of America, better known as ALCOA. I’m guessing the perfin is very common, but duplicate COMs are pretty scarce. Regular COMs in this period were 5¢; the dups were 2¢.

Ahorros Postales are mentioned but not cataloged in the 1979 version of Stevens Revenue Stamps of Mexico but not in the 1968 version. The 1979 Stevens directs yopu to a couple of early 1970s MEXICANA (MEPSI Journal) articles. As I have access only to the 1968 version at home, this is from memory. You can probably get copies of the articles from MEPSI.

jaywild yeah, but since I've not been into stamps much in the past year, and just happened to see this lot, there's a reasonable chance it will be a while before he has to worry about me. It's almost butterfly season again .... mid 70s today, four days this week in the 80s. The neat spring butterflies should be on the wing within the next 4 weeks.

NOIP… Something to show for today. It’s a third class surface mailing to Denmark from the US showing the correct rate for a ≥ 4 oz < 6 oz article, presumably, because of the date, a Christmas card enclosing family photos. The back seems to have been sealed originally with a “Boys Town” seal at the tip of the flap, however the flap is all stuck down now. The contents, now lost, were removed via the bottom of the cover, perhaps to save the “Boys Town” seal from being damaged.

US RPO Question...

I found this postal card, OM.& KEARNEY R.P.O.

Postmark date is 22 May 1881. I'm assuming it is Omaha & Kearney. Message is docketed Council Bluffs and is addressed to Haynesville, Maine. Killer is a Negative W.

I can't find this in my MacDonald & Towle reference, nor anything on the internet. There is a reference to a 'Omaha & Kearney Junction'. I can't find anything other than an Omaha & Kearney Agent. I've also searched a archive of Jim Mehrer's auctions.

Anyone have information on this RPO? Rarity?

Good morning,

I recently sold a lot containg Sudan Military Telegraph stamps (lot 320194178647). The buyer has said that the cancell reads 'Muskateneusse' meaning 'Nutmegs' in German.

Does anyone know why a Sudanese Military Telegraph stamp would have such a marking?

I have tried Google, which hasn't helped.

Unfortunately, I don't see much of value in your images, junksaseller. You'll need to provide a better idea of what's in there in order to sell at much over your start, once shipping is figured in. I'm afraid there not much needed other than research to find out of there are any better items, then good scans of anything worthwhile.
Posted by jaywild   ( 1049 ) on Feb-08-08 at 20:33:54 PST   Listings
junkaseller… My first suggesting regarding your selling—cut down on the verbiage in your lot description, and also make the font smaller and keep it all one color, like black. While it may look artistic to you, jumping around in different sizes and different colors is very irritating to someone who just wants a little information.

Suggestion 2: Put your pictures before all the wordage. People are impatient, and if they have to scroll down again and again just to get to the end of your encyclopedic comments they will think there are no images and will close the lot and never come back.

Last suggestion—take pictures of the stamps on the first pages of both these albums (red arrows) and add them to your lot. If you have any valuable stamps they will almost certainly be on the very first pages.

poppadawg patterns S28 and S29 (which were in the link provided earlier) are identified with Seaboard Air Line Railway in Richmond, VA. Patterns S30 and S31 aren't identified as to user. I couldn't tell from the scan, but I thought S30 or S31 were the best matches.

due2cents tough to see the holes in the scan, but FGE in a horizontal pattern is F77, associated with Fruit Growers Express Company in Washington DC.

NOIP the perfin lot I linked earlier arrived today. It did contain I119.7 (A rated) and C23A (B+ rated). The C23A was almost a perfect match for the pattern in the book - only the second from the last hole in the C was slightly off while all other holes were precisely aligned against C23A, while versus C23 several of the holes in the C were misaligned in addition to the crossbar of the A.

Alec

There are many stamps I have never seen either in real life or virtually on the internet.
I therefore cannot supply images of them.
Most are either double or inverted or simply overprints.
Foremost would be some of the Japanese overprints for Ryukyu Islands. I've never seen one from the Amami District with the Fuji image.

Next in line would probably be the double overprint for the Cyprus (Kyrenia) 1960 30m stamp.

Closely followed by the St. Helena "Tristan relief" stamps, which I have seen, but never for sale.

The cheapest set which I have never seen for sale are the St. Kitts 1989 definitives with an ugly outline map of the country.

Word 2003 help Thanks to Peter, Stamphick and Jaywild for the information. I haven't had a chance yet to see if the link or other methods work but I will try and figure it out this weekend. I apologize for being such a computer dummy but this old dog is trying to learn new tricks and it ain't easy ! Once I know how something is done I'm not so bad but it's the getting to understand part which I find difficult. Sadly my educational years did not include computers.

Paul I wish you the best of luck with the contract. I'm curious though as to how you define a stamp season ? For me it never ends. By that I mean I am continually searching for items that I need. Some I know exist it's just that they haven't been offered on the open market yet. :-(

I wonder how many other covers / stamps many of us needing only ever come on the market once the current owner has died or given up collecting. So out of curiousity if money was no object which "single" stamp item or cover would anyone most like to have ? By that I only refer to items that are known to exist.
If you have a picture saved to your dream item please do share it with the board.

Roger Happy to have been of some assistance. I'm just pleased it has arrived safely.

due2cents JH is, as you guessed, for John Hancock. There are 3 patterns that are extremely difficult to separate, J56A, J56B and J56C.

The SAL pattern is tough to see, but I think it's either S30 or S31, neither of which has an identified user or location.

The Burpee seed pattern is again tough to see, but it should be W13 or 13A or 13B or 13C or 14, all identified with W. Atlee Burpee & Company in Philadelphia.

MKT is, as earlier stated, Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway Company, General Offices: Parsons Ks. It appears to be pattern M148.

WE & M is Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company, East Pittsburgh, PA. It is pattern W84.

The No Idea appears to be a pattern with a lot of missing pins - I have no idea what it could be.

Alec… I have Word 2000, and it’s probably similar enough to 2003. The important element is how you paste the image. If you just hit PASTE or Ctrl+V you won’t be able to move the image. But if you do a PASTE SPECIAL and then select “Picture” you will be able to drag the image around after pasting.

Dave and Soggy, as the toll tickets were stopped a long time ago, and the average age of a car in Sydney is probably only 5 to 10 years, dont think the Scrap Yard thing will work. Maybe try asking some of the Railway / Bus Ticket Collectors.
I know as a kid in the 1950s Sis and I collected all the toll tickets and bus tickets to play, Conductress at Home. Dad worked for the railways and we had odd bits of old uniforms to play with.

Actually I think Alec's question was where to find the hand pointer that could be used to move the picture around. The answer is that there is no such thing -- the image can't be dragged with the mouse pointer.

de66 NSW toll receipts

I remember a guy who was collecting State motor vehicle dept taxpaid decals for truck road taxes. Rare. His source was the junkyards. He would go to truck graveyards and swab them off the cabs with alcohol and other secret solvents. Toll receipts would most likely be found in the glove compartments (maybe you call them map compartments) and under the back seats of junks in the auto graveyards of Australia.

due2cents thanks for posting the links. When I'm home tonight I'll dig up info on the US ones you've posted.

jaywild and billsey I agree, it's tough to tell which pattern is in the lot .... I'm anxious to receive it! I got positive feedback, so I'm sure it's in the mail. The patterns in the catalog are made, I believe, from stamps with the appropriate pattern. I think they were traced. Often there are bent pins which make it tough to identify which pattern is the right one. If I can't get a good match, I'll contact the catalog chairman to see if he has suggestions.

Yeah, looks like a C23B to me... The center hole on the A is dropped like the C23A, the top and first to the right holes on the O are far apart like the C23 the spacing on the last three holes on the C toward the bottom right doesn't match either the C23 or the C23A.

NOIP for the lot I linked earlier, the patterns I think are the scarce ones are in the last row, i119.7 and C23A (I think it is C23A instead of C23 due to the position of the single hole of the crossbar of the A). I'll know once the stamps arrive.

I stand corrected.
I thought you meant the GW when you wrote Washington.
Obviously I don't live in NYC.

BTW if you google-earth the High Bridge, there is a wonderful shadow of the bridge in the Harlem river.

IO - the George Washington Bridge (GW) crosses the Hudson from Manhattan to Jersey. Its a double decker, with the lower deck being nicknamed the Martha.

The Washington (or as New Yorkers call it, the Little George), spans the Harlem at 180th Street in Manhattan. The Little George was build in 1888. Jeff's photo was snapped from the Washington Bridge, so named because the Manhattan side is called Washington Heights.

Then there's the Hamilton bridge, which is between High Bridge and the Little George. It was build about 1960 or so, and connects the Cross Bronx to the Manhattan approach to the George Washington.

Its all a bit confusing to someone who's never lived in the city.

Thanks for the extra info.
I pass by that view every time I travel from my NY home to La Guardia down the Major Deegan.

Its actually a little to the south, not north, of the GW bridge.

To Hysterical Jeff....

Neat NYC postcards. I have quite a few similar 'oldies'.

Let me tell you about the bridge view. The bridge is a pedestrian only bridge, called High Bridge, and contains an acqueduct that used to supply water to northern Manhattan. The acqueduct started at the Jerome Park Reservoir, travelled south underneath Acqueduct Avenue (naturally) until Tremont Avenue, when it then was under University Avenue. At the Bronx side of the bridge the acqueduct turned right onto the bridge. The tower in the background is a water tower. When I was just a little tyke, my folks lived 3 blocks from the bridge, . I remember walking across it.

The photo itself was taken from the Bronx side of the Washington Bridge, just to the north. Tracks are the New York Central Railroad, river is the Harlem River but the pier is long gone. To the left of the tracks and parallel now runs the Major Deegan Expressway, built mid-1950's. The brick pillars that support the acqueduct interfered with barge traffic on the river, and were replaced by a steel span just over the river portion.

(Probably more than you ever wanted to know)

Some eBay sellers really p me off.

A normally coin seller has stamps at 2/3 catalog start price, a $4.60 S&H charge, and then states that item will not be mailed till the end of February cos their mailer is on vacation.

Oh, and NY buyers add sales tax.

Excuse me if I don't bid!!!

Postage: well the really frustrating thing when I did some selling two years ago, was that a typical cover with some cardboard and a big enough envelope usually weighed in at 22-23g, and postage outside Europe doubled above 20g. A few times I actually sent covers protected only by a folded sheet of paper...

OTOH, I've bought large amounts of postage on eBay for about 50% of face, so if and when I start selling again I can afford to undercharge so as not to scare away bidders...

PS Quite enjoyed the postcard showings also and the buys from "due2cents". Sometimes I wish I was into buying things on the spur that I like but if I did that I'd have no cash for whenever items I do need get offered. I just have to be content to save and hopefully add one or two items a year.

Postcard Steal of the Day: Part 2

My interest is actually not the razor cancels, but the Lausanne Barre-Cité examples. In the Swiss PTT ' deCoppet correspondence logs are references to deCoppet billing the PTT for a "Barre-Cité" in June 1902. It is not a razor canceler. In August he wanted it back for a few days as a sample. It is possible he used this canceler as a pattern to deterine whether his mechanism would work on the standard size cancelers currently in use. Since he lived in Lausanne, and he is known to have frequented the PO, it's quite possible the "Barre-Cité" was used by him for research purposes. It is interesting to note that I've asked my Swiss friend where and what is the significance of "Barre-Cité". He doesn't know and the cancel researchers don't actually know where it was used and why the "Barre-Cité" is in the cancel.

I only have one other in my collection and that is from 1900, maybe prior to deCoppet tinkering with it.

The card in the lot that interests me for my collection is the thin bookmark card labeled printed matter. As an odd size post card it could have been mailed at the 1-cent 2 ounce printed matter rate. It did not qualify for the pc rate due to its size. But as the sender had written a message on it it then became liable to the UPU surface letter rate of 5 cents, hence short paid 3 cents, or 15 centimes, and charged 30 centimes double deficiency due. Then at some point someone said heck with that and crossed it out and allowed the 2-cents to do the job. Its a neat item.

Posted by paperhistory   ( 1993 ) on Feb-06-08 at 13:29:35 PST   Listings
Jeff: well done. And most of the cards are Rotograph or its predecessor, National Art -- one of the best publishers. I actually collect Rotograph in a somewhat desultory fashion (i.e., when I stumble across them or in the rare instances I make it to a postcard show).

peetah: I don't know that I'd call integral rate usage on stamped covers necessarily common, but it did vary town by town. There is an ongoing on integral rate markings (on stampless mail) in the Chronicle (the publication of the Classics Society) by James Milgram.

I have a gold-medal exhibit on the integral rate markings of Cincinnati. Scans of an older version of it here; I've added some material since these were done.

But one policy change in particular is sure to have far reaching consequences - eBay's policy regarding fixed price listings and store items under $1.00. Starting February 20 - THEY'RE NOT ALLOWED! After February 20, you will no longer be able to list any item with a fixed price or in your store under $1.00. If you have existing items which are under $1.00 you will have 60 days to increase the prices. If you do not increase the price of or cancel these listings, you'll still be charged for them, but they won't show up in search results!

Does someone recognize the Express label in the Iraq railway cover shown on that page?
http://fuchs-online.com/iraq/postal_history/Stations/Hamza.htm
The label is definitely not of Iraq origin, I assume someone brought it from abroad to Iraq and put it on the cover prior of posting the cover. Also, the label did not serve any postal use...

Thank you Bjorn for the explanation!

I've been trying for some time to get a correctly used copy of that card. So far I've seen usages like this one. The rate is 6c for a domestic card, but 5c for a local one. The card in the auction is sent within Hamburg, so it's overpaid in 1 rpf.

davidross... if you believe a forgery is being offered on eBay there is a message on this page above the message board --------- to report a stamp listing you suspect is in violation of eBay policy..

you should not be trying to contact the bidders of that auction, that is against eBay policy.

Jim Jaywild, I would have no problems writing software for eBay, they are very professional. At least those who maintain their core systems, otherwise it would break down. The ones who write the messages for the web interface may be another breed...

Milenko, it's not the stationary that is a rarity, it's the special cancel "BAYREUTH FESTSPIELHÜGEL". With this, it catalogues DM 3500 in my Michel 1999 stationary catalogue, and apparently EUR 1750 now. The description says "probably less than 5 known". An ordinary used copy is DM 8 (EUR 4).

Good Morning from Abu Dhabi. Topic is Wind? Also here in the UAE we have very high winds since several days ..., and meanwhile 4 defective sea cables..., wonder what is going on!

To return to philately, is someone here having the Robson Lowe Encyclopedia, Asia part, where the India Postmarks, classified by Renouf, are included?

And to think some people don't like letter enclosures.

scottpel3 - thanks for getting back about the Arbor Day letter. I wonder how the recipients were determined? I have not received my lot yet. I will try to get some info from the APRL

Some comments about my auctions closing last night, those were extras from a 20-year search and study of the FECB, Foreign Exchange Control Board of Canada, a currency control censorship directed primarily at the US.

Way back in 1995 or 1996 I got a national level vermeil for 7 frames, which qualified me for Capex in 1997. It was accepted in a 5-frame version and won a Large Silver with Felicitations. I am told Harry Lussey (rip) liked it. Just last year I reworked it into a 10 frame exhibit, hope to show it at Texpex in Dallas this spring.

In listing the lots I took some advice that Richard F passed on here, when listing something, make an impact with the subject. It has worked well for me many times since.

One thing I did this time was to start 7-day listings on Sunday, then more 5-day on Tuesday, and more 3-day on Thursday. It was interesting to monitor WATCHES in my eBay, I could tell it was going to be an active couple of hours when the lots fell.

Something sellers might want to consider. Or maybe not.

Jeff

Bjorn… Yes, that eBay blurb is pretty silly. Can you imagine writing software for such dopey projects? It’s like companies that insist their secretaries answer the phones with: “Good morning, XYZ Company, how may I assist you?” Only a complete moron would think that makes his company sound more professional. What it actually does is tip everybody off that the people in charge are anal-retentive past all hope.

Io... We’ve had terrific winds here too, so please be on the lookout for a copy of my phone bill, which the wind ripped out of my hands two days ago.

That should read: However when the PMG wants to send out the Arbor Day stamp early, or when President Kennedy wants to have a ceremony a couple of days early for the Labor Day issue they are not subject to the rule.

Jeff:
Sorry I don't remember where I read about the letter. It was probably in one of the weeklies. I do have two copies of the letter in my collection.
It seems that some public officials pursue a policy of "due as I say not as I do". Stamp sheets are sent to post offices with the missive "positively DO NOT SELL until the FIRST DAY SALE DATE". However when the PMG wants to send out the Arbor Day stamp early, or when President Kennedy wants to have a ceremony a couple of days early for the Labor Day issue. The program is dated a few days before the FDOI cancel on it. The ceremony appears to have been held on the printed date and handed out with the stamps cancelled FDOI dated a few days later. http://www.ceremonyprograms.com/programs/labordayprogram_1886.JPG
One other example is the Magsaysay program. The ceremony was held the night before the FDOI and handed out with a mint block of stamps.
This is what I collect and find interesting. These items are also documented pre FDOI usages - not by a cancellation but by their printed document.

NOIP: anyone else think this is silly? After I place a non-snipe bid at the opening price for an item (which I sometimes do if I don't intend to bid more), eBay says:

Congrats bjornmu, you're the first bidder. Hope you win!

No eBay, I don't beleive you. You don't hope I win, and neither does the seller. You hope I get outbid, that's what you do!

Knuden -

I don't remember seeing other multiple wrappers except the one in my exhibit.
http://www.ilhawaii.net/~rheath/razorexhibit2007/3_page14.html

It would have beem much easier for any regular user to cut the wrappers into singles then add the necessary stamps for uprating. The storage space required would have been much easier after cutting the wrappers.

I almost bid, and if it had had a razor you would not have won LOL!

Knuden I have seen double wrappers before but I can't say I have seen that many so congratulations on a nice find.
Somewhere here I know I have a registered wrapper and once I find it again I'll scan and ask what you think of it. I don't recall seeing many registered wrappers before either.

Paul When finished sorting please do show any interesting Columbia items you come across. I don't know why but I find S. America stamps and postal history quite fascinating. I don't know much about any of it really but I do like to see it.

GOOD NEWS -----The stockbook that I purchased at auction of Colombia and its States had a catalog price written in it ,on the first page .I assumed and probabily other bidders that it was with all the reprints and fakes counted as real stamps so I bid accordingly .Today found out that wasn't the way it was figured .Lots of better stuff but it needs work because the value is not in the main numbers but the different varities the stockbook has ,time will be worth sorting and puting everything in dealer cards so the real value can be seen, many items are not in the catalog also a bonus to me . ....paul

I always suggest a trip to Goodwill for scanners... You can typically get one that will do everything you want for under $10. I always get HP scanners that way (since it's so easy to download their software), but I would assume other brands would work as well.

"Hi,

I am trying to link to other websites on the net that my viewers, from Bayareakicks.com, might go to once they leave my site. I know your site: http://sudeten.bizland.com/postal_history.htm deals with various recreational activities, and sine my viewers are pretty active; I think it might be a good idea to link to you."
As far I know, the only "various recreational activities" was the ones the German soldiers got! :O(

Greenrose Any flat bed scanner will do fine. I just got a new Cannon 3 in one, printer, scanner, copier for under $100
Some of the guys here could give you tips about which dpi suits best etc. I don't understand any of that, I just scan everything at 150 and hope for the best in my auctions. (don't have any auctions running at present as I'm off on vacation next week).
Post some links here to what you scan and they'll tell you how you can improve if necessary.
Good luck.

Jeff nice selling! well done.

GREENROSE Go with any basic flat bed scanner ,here is a example of my HP 3970 scanner but any popular scanner will do. This picture was increase to show at 300 DPI.

This is a fold over during printing and the details are good enought for a catalog queen,or a hole filler to examine and start crying about something .For those experts here ,the stamp is from Tolima .Will be working on Colombia and states for the rest of the week . Tolima ,printing fold over......paul
