Thanks all for the suggestions.

D66: Thanks for the offer. Unfortunately, I read that Frontpage was put out to pasture, not shipped with Vista, and the older versions crash in Vista. Is this not true? (he doesnt have it anyway but maybe you could send him an older version.)

Stamphicj: The NVU would be perfect but no version for macs so I could not help him along. (Alec is the kind of user that doesn't know what an applications folder is :/ You want the job? LOL.

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking.

"Alec wants to expand beyond the template format"

I construct all my web pages using basic html and adobe pagemill. Which was free and is, unfortunately, no longer available.

Admitedly there is a trade-off between wanting to display a collection and learning the language required to get it displayed.

Nothing comes easy unless you have the money to get someone else to do it for you!

Perhaps Paul or David can come up with suggestions.
Posted by manhattanconcepts   ( 10 ) on Feb-10-08 at 16:53:05 PST   Listings
Alec,

The new site regarding your inflation collection is a welcome addition and you are so welcome for my help.

Question for board:

Alec wants to expand from the template format we used, long distance, to create his current site. He wants to achieve a more sophisticated exhibition format for other purposes, and as you can see, his collection warrants a sophiticated format.

If it were me, I would use Dreamweaver or Photoshop but I am a mac user and am unfamiliar with inexpensive graphics software available for the pc. I know those programs are available for the pc but there is no point in having him spend a lot of money on this kind of software unless he plans to do sites for a living.

If anyone can think of less expensive graphics applications for pc's, or perhaps ones that comes with Vista out of the box, I would appreciate knowing what they are. I think I can walk him through creating a site with Word 2004, (ugh) but that would be challenging to say the least.

He does not have Photoshop Lite or any design programs convertable into html that I can see. We have considered trials of the expensive stuff but I think the learning curve would eat up the trial time very quickly.

I have also investigated software that comes with hosting packages but all of that is template based as far as I can tell and no improvement over what we have used.

Suggestions appreciated!

my hearty congratulations on a job well done. it shows how diligent research on a specialised subject with examples to show the rate changes is suited for an online display. You will be very successful when the collection is exhibited competively and your work will be envied by many who wish they could do the same with their philatelic endeavours,

hondo 64 - if you have a stamp shop nearby take it to them and ask about the overall value of it. A dealer should be able to thumb through it and determine if it is a common collection or something of value.

Hondo Easiest may be for you to show here a couple of pages from a country or two here. It will allow for a better opinion to be given as to what is or could be suitable for ebay or maybe even through a main line auction sale.

HONDO, welcome to the board. For starters, scroll way back down this board to the big yellow box and read some of the links there.
You didn't say which countries your family has collected. You will need to check values from a Stamp Catalogue. Value of stamps depends on condition, and rarity. Age has very little bearing on the value. Many fun collections are put together with little money being spent, so you are probably the best judge on whether your Father and Brother spent a lot of money on their hobby or not. If they did they could have receipts and invoices from Auction Houses or Stamp Dealers for some of the better stamps. These will help you.

Some of our chatters here will be along during the course of the next day or 2, so check back often for more advice, but in the meantime read the Yellow Box.

For best results, stamp pictures for eBay need to be SCANS of the stamps, not digital photographs.

Could anybody give me some general information.I recently inherited a stamp collection from my Brother.

It was started by my Father around 1917 and my Brother worked on it up until a couple years ago.

I know nothing about stamp collecting or how to go about finding the value of this collection.

Could anybody give me some advice on how to find the value of this.

Is it possible to start taking pictures of some of the stamps, describe them, and put them up for auction,a few stamps at a time ?

I would appreciate anybodys help.

Thank you

NOIP The work on my home page is now well under way. Still a lot of things I want to change and add. That though will be a slow process as I still have a lot to learn.

I must take this opportunity to warmly thank Katrina who came here towards the end of last year and very kindly offered me help to at least get me started. Without her help I'd still be dead in the water.

It is basically just my collection and a lot of text information that I hope explains many things which you do not get to read if the collection is in competition. A site showing it as a competition exhibit is a future task I have set myself.

The first postal period #18 has not all been scanned yet and there are still a few items to be added to the second postal period #19 . The other periods are all completed for content at least.Anyway for anyone interested in Inflation Provisional Postal History please feel free to have a peek at my efforts so far.

Re COM I am aware that ebay/Paypal does not accept the COM as a so called secure method of posting.
I don't sell that often on ebay and though I do accept Paypal as a payment method I certainly don't insist on buyers taking out expensive tracking mail postage costs. Yes admittedly there is the risk that some scammer may try and claim the item never arrived but that is just something I have lived with since day 1 of selling on ebay.

To be honest I don't agree with the new fee hike increases either but as D1 stated there simply isn't another more popular selling site around at the moment. Until such time as ebay have some serious competition and both buyers and sellers are aware of it then ebay will simply continue to be the main venue for buying and selling for the majority of online buyers. Hence why they continue to do as they please.
By buyers I refer to philatelic material not other categories.
Posted by iomoon   ( 1059 ) on Feb-10-08 at 11:18:17 PST   Listings
Surely the postage cost only becomes a moot point when the cost of the stamp exceeds the cost of postage.

Paying $4.60 to get tracking on a stamp bought for $3 is patently absurd.

PayPal does not recognize the Cert. of Mailing in their dispute process. They require a service that's traceable via the web. So you must choose one of such services. PayPal wants to be able to put the number into their computer and get a report on the package's location.

I am not a complainer as this board well knows….

eBay fee hike is fine by me everything goes up and up so what, get over it and move on.

eBay bidders and underbidders filled my stamp tin with cash last week and I can’t see the local dealers giving me that sort of money for my revenue and railway material I often sell.

Good on ya eBay keep it up!

I don't believe eBay/PayPal recognize the USPS Certificate of Mailing in Disputes.
All it shows is that something was mailed, not that it was delivered.
And eBay/PayPal take the position that it's the seller's responsibility until delivery is confirmed.
Posted by jaywild   ( 1049 ) on Feb-10-08 at 09:24:35 PST   Listings
comrade… If eBay started charging fees to buyers their business would dry up in a matter of hours, otherwise they would have already done so. They believe in wringing every last cent out of every last person they can, but this has policy has its limits. Remember the foolish king and the goose that laid the golden eggs? Well, there you are.

The feedback issue has its pros and cons, the biggest pro being that buyers who have something to complain about will be able to leave appropriate feedback without fear of suffering a retaliatory negative themselves. If sellers are conscientious they shouldn’t have a problem with the new system—if they are accustomed to walking a thin line between honesty and flummery the new policy might get them to acquire a little more integrity.

The most common complaint any seller has with buyers is non-payment, and since eBay already has policies in place to deal with deadbeat bidders the new policy will neither improve nor worsen that particular difficulty.

hello,
I was just wondering what ebay stamps sellers think about the new changes. I know ebay charges are high, but those of us who sell in a standard auction pay a higher commission rate. Just think what would happen if ebay started charging fees to the buyer, like most stamp auctions!!! The biggest concern that I see the inability to leave negative feedback. I have never left negative feedback, but I would like to just in case. What do you think?

NOIP… Yes, that is a wonderful Warsaw uprising exhibit, and I’m glad it has gone to an appropriate home where it will be kept intact. It always saddens me to see a collection cut up that was obviously put together lovingly. Some weeks back there was flood of covers on eBay from Maine, hundreds of them on pages all carefully labeled and mounted that must have taken twenty years to put together. I bought items that fit into collections of mine, and wrote the seller asking whose collection it was that was being dismantled, but received no reply.

Jeff S... That duplicate COM was part of a prexie-liberty-Prominent Americans-Americana covers collection currently being lotted out on eBay. I got some other choice items from it over the past few weeks.

infla-alec... Certificates of Mailing have only a limited usefulness in terms of legal proof that an item was actually mailed when and where stated. I use them infrequently, and only as a deterrent to potential shifty claims of “I never received —”. I bought one recently and emailed a scan of it to someone who might otherwise have been tempted to pull such a ploy. It’s like putting a sticker on your window that says you subscribe to an on-call home alarm system. Most crooks don’t want to run the risk of finding out just how accurate that claim is.

You can also get a Return Receipt from the PO but that requires sending the item via the much more expensive Priority Mail. (Priority Mail is the Post Office’s version of a tax upon the naïve—priority items all go in the same pouches and the same trucks/trains/planes as regular first class mail, at about ten times the cost.) I think the COM is about a dollar.

I am trying to identify a german stamp that I saw printed in an album, but cannot find in my Scott catalog (I know, I should get a Michel). THe vertical stamp features a palm tree behind a swastika and was situated with Feldpost, Luftfeldpost and Kurland stamps in the album. It was a black-and-white album photo, so I'm not sure of color. Jimbo Thank you for the information. I don't buy much from ebay US side but handy to know I can ask for a mailing certificate. Yes I do mainly make $ payments via Paypal but I also hardly ever ask for registered or traceable mail. Now if only Paypal would agree that a COM is ample proof that an item has been posted and stop trying to force buyers to pay for unwanted expensive registered mail. I say that because I have noticed now a few more sellers insisting on registered mail being used for Paypal payments. I assume because the scammers are using non registered mail to claim item was never sent etc and demanding their money back from Paypal.
I have no idea how widespread that scam is but hopefully it isn't too common amongst the philatelic community.

The collection was offered azt the Felzmann Auction held from 09 - 09 Febraury 2008, lot 7400.
https://www.felzmann.de/de/pages/tophighlights120/

Description:
1944 UPRISING of national Polish Home Army (ARMIA KRAJOWA) against the German occupation, the so-called WARSAW UPRISING (Aug 01 - Oct 02, 1944), analyzed and illustrated in academical manner using Polish letters, documents, provisional and definitive insurgent postage stamps on more than 80 albums leaves. This collection (consisting of 3 albums) impresses e.g. with the presentation of the ORIGINAL DRAFTS (water colours) of the first POLISH OWN POSTAGE STAMPS 1944, authenticated by the "Sklanica melunkowa Mokotowska 65" (Polish intelligence office Mokotowska Street) or "Komenda placu pld Warszawa srodmiescie" (HQ inner-city South) (naturally unique, all with certificates by Petriuk BPP). The scope of INSURGENT STAMPS in various colours and prints with the well known "1.VIII 1944" designs (illustrating soldiers and ruins) is virtually breath-taking and gives together with the enormous number of SCOUT MAIL COVERS written in and/or delivered to the trenches of the uprising a MUSEUM CHARACTER of the utmost importance for the Polish national identity and history of the Polish State in World War II.

Included in the 123 items are postage stamps printed by insurgents with seals made from potatoes. Jaywild Jim I never knew the US had a certificate of mailing system. Does it still exist ?

Here in the UK we have had it for years now and it still exists to this day and is a free service. I'm not 100% sure but with a certificate of posting here I think it also gives you free insurance up to a certain amount if the item sent is subsequently lost or damaged.
Funnily enough the free service is hardly ever used.

jaywild neat perfin on the duplicate COM. Yes, ACA is for Aluminum Company of America in New Kensington, PA. It is an E rated perfin (quite common), but as you point out, it's the use that is scarce, not the perfin pattern.

Terry Hines… Another neat aspect of that $50 stamp auction is that it is only available for local pickup. Good news for all those folks who live in Crown Point, Ohio I guess…

On another note, and apropos given the recent perfin discussion, is this duplicate certificate of mailing. The name/address of the addressee is in carbon-paper blue (anyone remember carbon paper?) and the 2¢ Frank Lloyd Wright stamp has an ACA perfin, presumably from Aluminum Company of America, better known as ALCOA. I’m guessing the perfin is very common, but duplicate COMs are pretty scarce. Regular COMs in this period were 5¢; the dups were 2¢.

Ahorros Postales are mentioned but not cataloged in the 1979 version of Stevens Revenue Stamps of Mexico but not in the 1968 version. The 1979 Stevens directs yopu to a couple of early 1970s MEXICANA (MEPSI Journal) articles. As I have access only to the 1968 version at home, this is from memory. You can probably get copies of the articles from MEPSI.

recent sale of
tristan releif

I've seen them offered twice on ebay, most recently at a (relatively) low start and sold with many bids, previously at a retail-ish buy it now, which I think was less than the cherrystone realization, and no takers.

Have already seen butterflies out here.
About all I can tell you is that they are yellow.
It's already 21C here, however the nights are cold.

jaywild yeah, but since I've not been into stamps much in the past year, and just happened to see this lot, there's a reasonable chance it will be a while before he has to worry about me. It's almost butterfly season again .... mid 70s today, four days this week in the 80s. The neat spring butterflies should be on the wing within the next 4 weeks.

Bill D… You’ve just tipped your hand to stjohnsstamps as to your bidding strategy. Next time he’ll know to dig deeper in his pockets if he wants to outmaneuver you.

stjohnstamps hopefully you'll feel better - nope, $22 wouldn't have won the lot either.

NOIP… Something to show for today. It’s a third class surface mailing to Denmark from the US showing the correct rate for a ≥ 4 oz < 6 oz article, presumably, because of the date, a Christmas card enclosing family photos. The back seems to have been sealed originally with a “Boys Town” seal at the tip of the flap, however the flap is all stuck down now. The contents, now lost, were removed via the bottom of the cover, perhaps to save the “Boys Town” seal from being damaged.

US RPO Question...

I found this postal card, OM.& KEARNEY R.P.O.

Postmark date is 22 May 1881. I'm assuming it is Omaha & Kearney. Message is docketed Council Bluffs and is addressed to Haynesville, Maine. Killer is a Negative W.

I can't find this in my MacDonald & Towle reference, nor anything on the internet. There is a reference to a 'Omaha & Kearney Junction'. I can't find anything other than an Omaha & Kearney Agent. I've also searched a archive of Jim Mehrer's auctions.

Anyone have information on this RPO? Rarity?

T I A,

Matt in Arizona

wrd3 - I was the underbidder for those perfins, just out of curiosity - if I had bid 22 instead of 12 - would I have won it?

Peterc8888 That is a New York Foreign Mail cancel. It is Van Vlisigen and Waud type W2 and common, used from 1874 to mid 1876. Put NYFM in your title and it will bring in more bids. It is not a great strike but nice.

Anyone in the community with a copy of
Confederate States Of America, the Special Postal Routes

In exchange, perhaps I can help you with Confederate

Good morning,

I recently sold a lot containg Sudan Military Telegraph stamps (lot 320194178647). The buyer has said that the cancell reads 'Muskateneusse' meaning 'Nutmegs' in German.

Does anyone know why a Sudanese Military Telegraph stamp would have such a marking?

I have tried Google, which hasn't helped.

Thank you to anyone who can help.

Martin.
